Big Scrappy Quilt (70 x85)

I finished my big scrappy quilt top. It is foundation pieced on used dryer sheets, which, when all is said and done, is not worth the trouble in my opinion. I love the diamond shapes that the dryer sheets allow you to make, but mostly they're hard to iron and too smelly when you're sewing the whole quilt together.

I played a bit with concentrating the light colors in the center and the darks at some of the edges, but it only occurred to me to do this late in process, so it's not as prominent a feature as it might have been. I love this pattern (or un-pattern). I love the fished results, and I love the purging of odd sized strips.

Here are a few close ups of some of the blocks. These quilts are a nice album of favorite fabrics.

An you never know who or what you're going to see peeking out at you.
(That's George Washington in the middle there)

Have a great day. If the weather holds I'm going to do some gardening.

Is this beauty coming to me for the quilting? I would love a closer look!

What a fun scrappy quilt. I've done foundation piecing on old thin cotton (too thin for quilting) and have been happy with the results. I've also used newspaper...but that you have to rip off.

What a beauty this is! I like the subtle light to dark, sometimes, that is overdone. I love the results of paper piecing, there is always a step that's no as fun. Your results are impressive to me; oh, and I love the border colors, too! Great job, Barbara.

I love this! It's one of my favorite kinds of a scrappy quilt, and the diamond shape you made gives it something extra.

If you didn't use dryer sheets, what would you use? I've used lightweight poly/cotton, but that's a bit heavy especially for such a big quilt. The best thing I ever found was the top of a dust ruffle, the part that went over the mattress. It was some sort of flimsy stuff. I know you're a thrift shop person, so maybe that's helpful to know.

Nice job, Barbara! Lots to look at in this one. I especially like your choice of borders, the polka dots in particular. Hope you had some good gardening time!

I like the way this turned out! I feel the same way about using dryer sheets for foundations. I made one quilt with them but don't think I'd do another.

Great quilt Barbara,
I never thought of using dryer sheets for foundations. I have used regular paper, thin cotton, and old yellow page phone books. It can be a bit of a pain to remove all the paper but it worked well enough.

I love all your scrappy fabrics and the dark border too.
Have fun in the garden.
Regards,
Anna

Oh Barbara, that's fabulous! I especially like that it has become an album of favorite fabrics for you. I'm still not sure I'll ever make a string quilt - although it's tempting - but I sure like them.

Barbara so happy I came by tonight and found your quilt was finished. It turned out lovely. I know how proud you are of it and how hard you worked on it.
Beautiful work as always
