Shisha

Annie posted instructions on how to do shisha embroidery and in her example, she used it to attach a coin. I took her idea and dug out some coins left from my trip to Mexico last year. I like the idea of using things with memories attached to them.

I also unearthed some old issues of Piecework magazine, and in one from 1994 they had an article on shisha embroidery with a lesson that incorporated cretan stitch, so I incorporated that as well. Now that I'm doing this embroidery work, I'm looking through old books and magazines that I haven't used in a long time and scanning them for ideas.

In my civilian life I'm getting ready to go back to school and I'm also doing research for a scholarly article I'm writing. I have made the important discovery that if I sit at a table and don't work on anything complicated, I can knit and read at the same time. I'm currently knitting a throw from this recent fun book (great for beginners). With both needle and pen, I have become a truly dangerous woman.

Ooh, yeah, look out world! You gotta bow down and say "we're not worthy" to a woman who can knit and read at the same time. Talk about multitasking. My husband can't drive and talk at the same time.

What are you taking in school?

Love the Shisha, always wondered how they did that.

Those sisha mirrors are on my list too. My mom got out some old magazines with tatting directions and I have been trying to tat. I love that this experience has opened my mind to some more needlearts than strictly quilting. I think I needed that.

Do consider taking Sharon's goggles class in the fall. It's all abstract embroidery (I think).

Rian,...well I can't claim to be able to talk and drive at the same time either, so I claim mortal status in that area. But the knitting and reading is for me the ultimate multitasking: I get to work and have fun at the same time.

And for me, going back to school means going back to work since I'm a college professor. But as Debra says, I'm waiting to hear the details about Sharon's class because if I can committ to the time I'll be taking her on-line embroidery class.

Oh my, we are truly not worthy (just kiddin). What do you profess?

I teach American literature, and ethnic and women's studies. I've started to tell people that I read for a living, hence the need for simultaneous knitting.

So excited to find out how to attach those cute little mirror embellishments I bought. I knew there was a method but had no idea what it was. Expect to see mirrors on one of my JQs.

I've needlepointed while watching TV a lot but don't think I could read and needlepoint at the same time.

Economy Block and Large-Scale Fabrics

Recenlty I decided to take out and use the stash of Asian-themed fabrics I'd set aside.  Many of them are large scale, so I wanted to fe...
