February Journal Quilt

I went for the obvious and did a Valentine for my February journal quilt. In my continuing play with photos I altered a photo Michael took of us kissing. He held the camera in one hand at arm's length and caught me by surprise both with the kiss and the photo.

I printed two black and white versions of the photo and some lyrics from the Beatle's song "In My Life." I love this song because it speaks to the experience of falling in love when you're older. I threw in some black and white squares I had floating around on my design wall.

I actually made the back side first. I trapped some cotton hearts behind the white lace and free-motion quilted the whole thing. I like the looks of the white against the red background. I added the three blue hearts on the top--they represent new love, and the hearts behind the lace are love in the past.

Now this one needs to be displayed so both sides can be viewed. They are equally interesting. I love your photo work, having manipulated them before printing. I also really enjoyed the symbolism of the hearts over and under the lace.

As I was reading your post, I looked at love from both sides now was going through my head! I like the way you used the lace. Sweet.

This is very nice, Barbara. It caught my eye quickly and then as I kept looking at it I saw more that I had not seen before. I think that is one of the greatest achivements in a piece of art.

I am wondering how you altered the photo...on the computer?...what kind of software?

Good job!

Barbara, I love the hearts behind the lace...I never would have thought of using lace for that... it is so effective. Being a Beatles fan and hearing them often, I recognized your song quote right away and knew I was going to like this. I like the manipulation of the photo also. Great!

What a special valentine on many levels. Was singing along with those lyrics, brings back memories. Along with Deb, I'd love to know what software you used for altering those photos, I'm looking for a program to use for my photos. Your husband must be a romantic, kissing you while taking a photo of it was so sweet.

That's indeed very dear, specially combined with the lyrics. Funny, I wanted to use the lace like you did in the february challenge too, but in the border. Couldn't find in time lace that was so 'transparant'. Saw it in a programm to frame black and white pictures, they used in fact these lacy kind of curtains. It looks cool and the back is another front.

Economy Block and Large-Scale Fabrics

Recenlty I decided to take out and use the stash of Asian-themed fabrics I'd set aside.  Many of them are large scale, so I wanted to fe...
